Scaling New Heights: Forbes Marshall to Lead One of the World’s Largest Hydrogen Injection Projects

We are delighted to announce that Forbes Marshall has been awarded a landmark contract by SAIL – Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) for the supply, installation, and commissioning of hydrogen injection in Blast Furnace No. 1. This groundbreaking project, aligned with the Union Government’s National Hydrogen Green Mission, is a major step forward for SAIL – Bokaro Steel Plant.

Forbes Marshall and SAIL teams sign the contract to launch one of the world’s largest hydrogen injection projects for green steel at Bokaro Steel Plant

This is not just a success for us; it is a win for the planet. Globally, this project features one of the highest hydrogen flow rates injected into a blast furnace, with Bokaro Steel Plant leading this critical initiative among all SAIL plants. This process will partially reduce the consumption of coke and coal, significantly helping to lower the overall carbon footprint.

The Power of Integrated System Packages

What sets Forbes Marshall apart in this project is our expertise in delivering fully-engineered system packages and project management services. For a complex application like hydrogen injection, precision and safety are paramount. Our proven experience in Process Automation and Control Systems ensures:

  • Precision Control: Our integrated systems manage the high-pressure flow of hydrogen with extreme accuracy, optimising the reducing process within the furnace.
  • Safety & Reliability: Considering the hazards associated with handling hydrogen gas, we provide robust, fail-safe system packages designed with suitable materials that meet all Industry Standards.
  • Seamless Integration: Unlike standalone products, our ‘package’ approach ensures that instrumentation, valves, and digital monitoring systems work in perfect harmony with the blast furnace operations.

The Path to a Global Landmark

Our journey to this milestone was built on technical credibility and relentless teamwork:

  • Proven Track Record: Our successful commissioning of a similar system in 2023 with Blast Furnace E of Tata Steel Plant and Primetals Technologies set the foundation. We are excited to work alongside RDCIS (the principal consultant) and Primetals once again to deliver world-class technical expertise.
  • Strategic Excellence: From the initial site visits in May 2025 to the contract award, our team ensured that Forbes Marshall met the stringent qualification criteria required for a project of this magnitude.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Priya Ranjan, Director-in-Charge of Bokaro Steel Plant, along with other senior officials of the plant.

As global markets increasingly demand steel manufactured with a lower carbon footprint, Forbes Marshall is proud to be at the forefront, positioning Indian steelmaking as a leader in the green energy transition.
