Steam line tappings should always be taken from the top so as to avoid the flow of condensate into the branch line. A steam tapping taken from below will also allow condensate to flow into the tapping leading to a deterioration in steam quality and also creating conditions for water hammer that would damage downstream pipelines, pipeline accessories and process equipment.
